As the current Head of the Department of Fish and Shellfish at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources has chosen not to continue in the position, we are seeking a new Head of Department who is motivated to lead a division with many important areas of responsibility.

The department is part of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, an independent and autonomous research institution under the Government of Greenland. The Institute is responsible for monitoring, research, and scientific advice concerning the sustainable use of living resources as well as the protection of the environment and biodiversity in and around Greenland.

The scientific work of the Department of Fish and Shellfish is organized around four main pillars – research, monitoring, advisory services, and communication – and is primarily focused on

  • advisory services on sustainable resource use and the conservation of biological diversity
  • stock assessments, including quantitative data analysis and modelling
  • stock delineation
  • reproductive and population biology of selected species
  • trophic ecology and species interactions
  • impacts of climate change.

The Head of Department serves as the scientific leader for the department's researchers and technicians and must possess in-depth knowledge of the processes from data collection to scientific advisory work. Emphasis is placed on relevant scientific expertise, and the applicant must have

  • background as a senior researcher or senior advisor
  • documented expertise in fisheries biology methods and scientific stock assessment
  • documented experience in research on population dynamics and stock assessment, including quantitative data analysis and modelling
  • relevant scientific publications
  • experience working with relevant international scientific committees
  • experience in securing funding for scientific projects
  • experience in project management, survey planning, and the use of research vessels
  • experience in industry collaboration
  • experience in communicating scientific advice
  • strong skills in collaboration and communication with both internal and external stakeholders.

It is considered an advantage if the applicant has a good understanding of Greenland society, including the Greenlandic language.
