Manufacturing and testing of drones at The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (DME), part of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sothern Denmark, offers a part-time position (01.02.2025 - 31.01.2026) as a Student Helper for its drone projects.
The Department for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is located in the inspiring building of Alsion that is place of residence for a number of enterprises in the Science Park: South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and the concert hall of Alsion. Thus, the university has close bonds to the industrial as well as the cultural environment of Sønderborg.
The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering provides a comprehensive suite of tools necessary for a full manufacturing process, including various modern 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D scanners among classic manufacturing methods.
Alongside mechanical competences, the student helper is expected to have insight into and not limited to basic fixed wing design, electronics, 3D printing and mechanics of flight.
Assignments of the Student Helper at DME include:
- Design fixed wing drones.
- Create technical drawings.
- Manufacture and assemble fixed wing drones.
- Select and install the necessary electronics based on the specific task of the drone.
- Material selection and testing.
- Prototyping and rapid iteration.
- Performance evaluation.
The following qualifications and skills are strong assets:
- Experience in designing complex EDF “jet” fixed wing drones.
- Experience in surface modeling in Siemens NX.
- Experience with rapid-prototyping techniques (3D printing, laser cutting) and assembling.
- Experience in creating technical drawings.
- Knowledge of Inertia Relief FEM analysis and Mechanical Design.
- Familiarity with aerodynamic principles specific to fixed-wing drones.

Employment shall take place in accordance with the framework agreement between the Ministry of Finance and SUL (National Union for Student Teachers in Government Service).
